SweetWater Brewery Begins Expansion

Sweetwater Brewery is expanding!  The award-winning craft brewery moved into our neighborhood in 2004, recently celebrated their 11th anniversary and now have launched a construction project that will enlarge their 26,000 square feet of space on Ottley Drive to 110,000 square feet.

In the  planning stages, Sweetwater purchased the former DHL facility next to them.  They will add a new event space, new lab and an expanded outdoor area as they build a new structure that will connect the two primary buildings.  Construction should be complete by November of 2011 and allow Sweetwater to quadruple their current barrel capacity.

Sweetwater is an environmentally friendly organization who hosts events such as the 420 Fest (SweetWater 420 Earth Day Celebration,)  donates money and campaigns for the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper, Earth Share of Georgia, Georgia ForestWatch and others.  They are keeping a strong focus on their principals during the construction process.  They had to remove a small building in order to build between the two primary facilities, and report that nearly 98 percent of the demolitioned building will be recycled.

We congratulate Sweetwater on their success!

Planters Hosts Food Event

The Atlanta Underground Market held their most recent feast at Planters.  This gathering of individuals with a common interest – eating –  gives vendors the opportunity to share their dishes and serves as an incubator for culinary start-ups.  The event provides a multitude of sensory dishes, gives the participants’ valuable feedback, and at the popular booths, creates profits for the cooks.  We visited Julie on her Doctor Princess blogsite and got great photos and commentary of the event.

The Atlanta Underground Market gathered at Planters at a recent feast.

As quoted in a telling article in The New York Times, “Some see the growth of the underground markets as part of a high renaissance of awareness for a Fast Food Nation generation, with its antipathy for the industrial food machine. In the recesses of the markets, a certain self-expressive, do-it-yourself “craft-ness” flourishes.”

The cost to get into the event is $3, and the vendors set their own prices for their food, typically from $1 - $5.

Good Measure Meals Feeding Contestants on TV Show

When is it alright to be the biggest loser?  When you are losing weight!

Do you know that our neighbors at Open Hand prepare approximately 6,000 meals PER DAY?  They provide healthy, nutritionally balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner for people with health issues as well as for fitness-conscious individuals.  While Open Hand started as a dependable meal service that cared for people with critical health concerns, they were joined by Good Measure Meals to also offer their services to people with special dietary requirements due to health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or abnormal body fat levels, and to healthy people who were simply busy professionals that wanted fresh, good tasting, convenient food.  Open Hand is a non-profit organization and is supported by donations and contributions.  They also operate using 100% of the profits from Good Measure Meals.

Good Measure has been providing its healthy, nutritionally balanced meals as a dieting aid to contestants on television shows like “The Biggest Loser.”  GMM has been involved with weight-loss television shows mutiple times because their balanced system produces results!

We applaude the good work of Open Hand and Good Measure Meals!

Brew Your Cask Off Festival benefits Sweetwater Design District Businesses

Claire Johnstone of Classic Design Services sits at the table representing the various SDD businesses at the 2011 Brew Your Cask Off Festival

The rain did NOT keep the crowds away at the 2011 Brew your Cask Off Festival that was held on Ottley Drive in March.  Sponsored by Sweetwater Brewery, over two thousand people attended then gala.  Sweetwater Brewery provided table space for the Sweetwater Design District to display information on area businesses.  Additionally, a portion of the ticket sales were donated to Sweetwater Desgin District for  beautification efforts in our area.  We plan to plant foliage at the entrance to our area at the fork where Ottley Drive intersects with Armour Drive.
